If you've ever looked at FPV drone motors, you've probably seen numbers like 1105 5000KV, 2207 1750KV, or 2207 1950KV.

But what does KV actually mean?

In simple terms, KV tells you approximately how many RPM (revolutions per minute) a brushless motor is designed to produce per volt under no-load conditions.

For example, a 2000KV motor theoretically turns at around 2,000 RPM per volt when running without a propeller load.

So at 16.8V:

2000 × 16.8 = 33,600 RPM

But don't assume your motor will actually spin at 33,600 RPM in flight. A propeller puts a load on the motor, and real-world factors such as resistance, heat, efficiency and battery voltage affect the actual RPM.

More importantly, higher KV does not automatically mean a more powerful motor.

To choose the right FPV motor, you need to consider KV together with the motor size, battery, propeller, drone weight and flying style.

What Does KV Stand For?

In drone motors, KV is used as a speed constant.

It is commonly expressed approximately as:

RPM per volt

A simplified formula is:

Theoretical no-load RPM = KV × Voltage

For example, a:

1500KV motor at 16V → approximately 24,000 RPM
1750KV motor at 16V → approximately 28,000 RPM
2000KV motor at 16V → approximately 32,000 RPM
2500KV motor at 16V → approximately 40,000 RPM

These numbers are theoretical no-load values.

Once you attach a propeller and put the motor into an actual drone, the motor operates under load and the real RPM will be different.

KV does NOT mean kilovolts

This is a common misunderstanding.

A 2000KV drone motor does not operate at 2,000 kilovolts.

The KV rating describes the motor's approximate rotational speed per volt under no-load conditions.

Why Is KV Important in an FPV Drone?

KV matters because it affects how the motor interacts with the drone's battery and propeller.

Think of an FPV power system like this:

Battery → ESC → Motor → Propeller → Thrust

The battery provides voltage.

The ESC controls the motor.

The motor turns the propeller.

The propeller produces thrust.

The KV rating influences how quickly the motor tends to spin at a given voltage.

This means changing the motor KV can change the way the entire drone behaves.

It can affect things such as:

Motor RPM
Current consumption
Thrust
Response
Efficiency
Motor temperature
Flight time

But these characteristics cannot be predicted from KV alone.

Higher KV vs Lower KV

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is thinking:

Higher KV = Better motor

That's not how it works.

A better way to think about it is:

Higher KV → higher potential RPM at the same voltage

Lower KV → lower potential RPM at the same voltage

Which one is better depends on the rest of the setup.

What Happens With a Higher-KV Motor?

A higher-KV motor tends to spin faster when supplied with the same voltage.

For example, compare:

1750KV

and

2200KV

At 16V, their theoretical no-load speeds would be:

1750 × 16 = 28,000 RPM

2200 × 16 = 35,200 RPM

The 2200KV motor has a higher theoretical RPM.

However, that does not mean it will automatically produce more useful thrust or make your drone better.

Higher RPM can also increase current demand and heat, particularly when combined with an aggressive propeller.

The motor, ESC, battery and propeller all need to be able to handle the setup.

What Happens With a Lower-KV Motor?

A lower-KV motor spins more slowly at the same voltage.

Lower KV is commonly used in setups where the motor is paired with a higher battery voltage or a larger propeller.

This is one reason you'll often see lower-KV motors on 6S FPV setups compared with similar 4S setups.

The higher battery voltage already gives the motor more voltage to work with, so using a lower KV can keep the motor's operating RPM within a suitable range.

KV and Battery Voltage

This is one of the most important relationships to understand.

The same KV motor can behave very differently depending on the battery voltage.

Let's take a 2000KV motor.

A fully charged 4S LiPo battery is approximately 16.8V.

So:

2000KV × 16.8V = 33,600 RPM

Now consider a fully charged 6S LiPo battery at approximately 25.2V.

2000KV × 25.2V = 50,400 RPM

That's a huge difference.

Important: These are theoretical no-load calculations. Actual RPM during flight will be different because the propeller creates load and the motor has electrical and mechanical losses.

This is why you shouldn't choose an FPV motor based only on its KV rating.

Why Doesn't a Motor Actually Spin at KV × Voltage?

The formula:

RPM = KV × Voltage

is a useful way to understand the relationship, but it is not a prediction of actual flight RPM.

In real life, the motor has to turn a propeller.

That propeller creates resistance.

The motor also experiences:

Electrical resistance
Bearing friction
Heat
Magnetic losses
Air resistance
ESC losses
Changing load during flight

Because of these factors, the actual RPM is different from the theoretical no-load value.

So if a motor is rated at 2000KV, don't expect it to constantly spin at exactly 2,000 RPM for every volt.

Think of KV as a motor characteristic that gives you an idea of its speed behavior, not a guaranteed RPM figure.

Does Higher KV Mean More Power?

No.

This is probably the most important misconception to clear up.

A motor's power capability depends on much more than its KV rating.

Power is related to:

Power = Voltage × Current

But the actual performance of a drone motor also depends on:

Motor size
Stator design
Winding
Magnets
Propeller
Battery
ESC
Cooling
Efficiency
Drone weight

For example, a large 1700KV motor can potentially produce much more thrust than a tiny 3000KV motor.

So comparing two motors only by their KV numbers doesn't tell you which motor is more powerful.

What Does 2207 Mean on an FPV Motor?

You might see an FPV motor labeled:

2207 1750KV

There are two important specifications here.

2207 refers to the approximate stator dimensions.

22 = approximately 22mm stator diameter
07 = approximately 7mm stator height

And:

1750KV = motor speed constant

So:

2207 1750KV

basically tells you:

Motor stator size + KV rating

You might also see motors such as:

1404 4600KV
1606 3800KV
1805 2400KV
2207 1750KV
2306 1950KV

The motor size and KV need to be considered together.

Motor Size and KV Are Not the Same Thing

Imagine you have:

Motor A: 1404 3000KV

Motor B: 2207 3000KV

They have the same KV.

But they are not the same motor.

The stator size is different, which affects characteristics such as the motor's ability to handle propeller loads and power.

This is why experienced FPV pilots don't simply look for the highest KV motor.

They consider the complete combination:

Motor size + KV + battery + propeller + drone weight

KV and Propellers

Your propeller has a major effect on how the motor behaves.

A propeller isn't just something attached to the motor.

It determines how much work the motor has to do.

A larger or more aggressive propeller can require significantly more torque and current from the motor.

For example, changing from one propeller to another can change:

Current draw
Thrust
Motor temperature
Efficiency
Response
Flight time

This means you can't evaluate a motor properly without considering the propeller it is going to spin.

A motor that works well with one propeller may behave very differently with another.

Propellers

KV, Battery and Propeller Work Together

This is the easiest way to understand FPV motor selection.

Imagine you're choosing a motor for a 5-inch drone.

You can't simply ask:

"Which motor has the highest KV?"

Instead, ask:

What battery am I using?

What propeller am I using?

How heavy is the drone?

What type of flying am I doing?

What does the motor manufacturer recommend?

These questions are much more useful.

A motor is part of a system, not an isolated component.

Example: 4S vs 6S FPV Setup

Let's say you have two similar 5-inch FPV drones.

One uses a 4S battery.

The other uses a 6S battery.

You wouldn't necessarily use the same KV motor on both.

Why?

Because 6S provides a higher voltage.

If you used the same KV motor on both setups, the 6S motor would have a much higher theoretical no-load RPM.

This is why you'll commonly find:

Higher KV → lower-voltage setups

Lower KV → higher-voltage setups

This isn't an absolute rule, but it's a useful starting point when understanding FPV motor specifications.

Always check the manufacturer's recommended setup.

How Does KV Affect FPV Drone Performance?

KV can influence several parts of your drone's behavior.

1. RPM

This is the most direct relationship.

Higher KV generally means higher potential RPM at the same voltage.

2. Current Consumption

A higher RPM setup can draw more current depending on the propeller and operating conditions.

This matters because your battery and ESC need to support the electrical demands of the motor.

3. Motor Temperature

If the motor is heavily loaded or operating outside its intended setup, it can generate excessive heat.

A hot motor isn't necessarily caused by KV alone.

Propeller choice, battery voltage, motor loading and airflow all matter.

4. Thrust

KV influences motor RPM, and RPM affects propeller performance.

But KV itself is not a thrust rating.

To understand actual thrust, look at the manufacturer's thrust tables for the specific motor, propeller and battery combination.

5. Efficiency

A motor running in an appropriate operating range can provide a good balance between thrust and energy consumption.

An incorrectly matched setup can waste energy as heat and reduce flight time.

How to Choose the Right KV for an FPV Drone

There isn't one KV that is best for every FPV drone.

Instead, start with the drone itself.

Step 1: Choose the drone size

A tiny whoop, 3-inch drone and 5-inch freestyle drone need very different motors.

Step 2: Choose your battery

Decide whether you're building around something like 2S, 4S, 6S or another configuration.

Step 3: Choose your propeller

Propeller diameter, pitch and blade configuration affect the load on the motor.

Step 4: Choose the motor

Now look at motor size, KV and manufacturer recommendations.

Step 5: Check the complete power system

Make sure the motor, ESC, battery and propeller combination is appropriate.

This approach is much safer than starting with:

"I want the highest KV possible."

Common FPV Motor KV Examples

You may see different KV ranges depending on the drone size and application.

Small FPV motors can have relatively high KV ratings because they often use smaller propellers and lower-voltage batteries.

Larger FPV motors can use lower KV ratings, especially when paired with larger propellers or higher battery voltages.

For example, you might commonly encounter:

Tiny whoop motors: Several thousand KV

3-inch FPV motors: Often higher KV than larger builds

5-inch 4S motors: Commonly higher KV than equivalent 6S setups

5-inch 6S motors: Commonly lower KV

These are general patterns, not strict rules.

The manufacturer's recommended battery and propeller combination should always take priority.

What Happens If You Choose the Wrong KV?

Choosing an unsuitable KV doesn't automatically mean your motor will fail.

The problem is that an incorrectly matched setup can create poor performance or excessive stress.

If KV is too high for your setup

You may experience:

Excessive RPM
Increased current consumption
Higher motor temperature
More ESC stress
Reduced efficiency
Shorter flight time

If KV is too low

You may experience:

Lower RPM
Reduced performance
Less aggressive response
Insufficient thrust for your intended setup

But remember that these effects depend heavily on the propeller, battery and motor size.

There is no single KV number that is "too high" or "too low" without knowing the rest of the setup.

KV vs RPM: What's the Difference?

KV and RPM are related, but they are not the same thing.

KV

KV is a characteristic of the motor.

It tells you approximately how much RPM the motor can produce per volt under no-load conditions.

RPM

RPM is the actual rotational speed of the motor.

For example:

A motor may be rated:

2000KV

but its actual RPM can change depending on:

Battery voltage
Throttle
Propeller
Motor load
Electrical losses
Flight conditions

So remember:

KV = motor speed constant

RPM = actual rotational speed

KV vs Torque

KV is also related to the motor's torque characteristics, but KV and torque aren't the same thing.

In a simplified motor model, a motor with a higher KV tends to have a lower torque constant, while a lower-KV motor tends to have a higher torque constant.

This is one reason lower-KV motors can be useful with larger propellers and higher-voltage systems.

However, you shouldn't judge torque simply from the KV number.

Motor size, winding design, magnets and construction also matter.

Should You Buy a Higher-KV FPV Motor?

Not necessarily.

If you're choosing a motor for your FPV drone, don't ask:

"Which motor has the highest KV?"

Ask:

"Which motor is designed for my battery, propeller and drone?"

Before buying, check:

Motor size
KV
Recommended battery
Recommended propeller
Maximum current
Motor weight
Manufacturer thrust data
ESC compatibility

A manufacturer's thrust table is especially useful because it can show how a specific motor performs with different propellers and battery voltages.

That's much more useful than comparing KV numbers alone.

A Simple KV Calculation

You can use this basic formula to understand the relationship between KV and voltage:

Theoretical no-load RPM = KV × Voltage

For example:

1750KV motor on 4S at full charge

4S full charge ≈ 16.8V

1750 × 16.8 = 29,400 RPM

1750KV motor on 6S at full charge

6S full charge ≈ 25.2V

1750 × 25.2 = 44,100 RPM

Again, these are theoretical no-load RPM figures, not actual flight RPM.
